Organizations need more than the best skilled and most knowledgeable employees, they need those employees to be committed and to be leaders. The challenges we now confront including the diversity in the workforce we lead, the constant improvement in technologies available, the flattening organizational structure and the expectations from the top, will require leaders to develop new skills and transform others to suit the changes ahead.
Asking doesn’t come easy for most. But if you don’t ask for want you want you won’t get what you want. To avoid having to ask we convince ourselves that we shouldn’t have too, believing that our work speaks for itself and that we should be rewarded for our effort. Or we believe that we have sufficiently hinted about our desires, but become frustrated and disappointed about being overlooked or ignored when career advancement opportunities arise. You must be visible and vocal to experience the career success you deserve.
Building relationships is key to success. No one has career success, personal success or leadership success with out having first developed mutually beneficial relationships. For some people it seems to come naturally. They can connect, make friends, build relationships and make people feel comfortable around them. They are also among the most successful.
