Start Your Day Off Right
Category: Personal DevelopmentStanding at my closet door, with chaos staring back at me I realized that once again I have to dig through the piles of clothes, the shoes on the floor and the handbags thrown everywhere, in an effort to get dressed quickly enough to get my kids through car-pool and my day off to a timely start. Frustration is building and inevitably my day is off to a poor beginning. Immediately I am plagued by thoughts of the annoyances that are sure to greet me throughout the day. This should be an argument for getting my closet organized, but who wants to spend an hour of valuable relaxation time to organize a closet? Then it hits me, an hour toward organizational bliss sure beats the hours that I have spent looking for a matching shoe or the just the right blouse. It was at that pivotal moment that I committed to obtaining more peaceful mornings and I set out to organize my closet!
The first item to go was my favorite shirt that I wore in the 80’s. I don’t know if I held on to it for the memories it sparked or if I was waiting for the style to return, but I was ready to donate it and agreed that I would wait for the retro modern style to hit the boutiques. I preserved my memories by having a picture taken of my 80’s outfit and continued on my voyage to obtain a closet that the neatest fanatic would envy.
Next, I committed to getting rid of the pair of pants that I bought on sale for a ridiculously low- can’t pass on price- despite the fact that the pants are less than flattering deal. For that matter, anything that did not make me feel dynamic when I put it on my body, was stripped from the hanger and immediately tossed into the “to be donated” bag.
Onto my coveted handbag collection…one of the first gifts my husband gave me was a maroon colored bag with a rather long shoulder strap that was barely big enough to hold a wallet. I thought donating it would make him feel bad, but keeping it reminded me that I should not send him out shopping for gifts without a few hints about what he should purchase. With his blessing, it was donated. The burden of being a considerate wife was lifted and my vision for a neat and tidy closet was slowly coming into view.
The one organized thing in my closet was in fact a belt hanger. On it hung every belt I had ever purchased. Including a thin yellow belt that was 20 years old! It is so hard to get rid of a perfectly good belt with an unblemished buckle, but when would I dare wear it? Keep moving sister… into the donation pile it is thrown.
So began my closet and life transformation.
You will see some of the different tools you can use to eliminate the chaos and bring order to your closet. To be revealed here in January 2008.
